Transient
A transient shaper uses a dynamic processor to alter the characteristics of a sounds Attack or Sustain. This can be used to position a sound in the mix: A high Attack and low Sustain will move the sound close to the front while the reverse will put it in the back.
Neutron from iZotope is a mixing channel strip with EQ, Compressor, Exciter, Transient Shaper and Limiter. The presets and Track Assistant quickly gives you a good starting point and the Masking Meter helps to avoid frequency collisions.
Transient Master from Native Instruments can enhance attack on drums and percussion. You can also use it to place an instrument in the mix: A high Attack and low Sustain will bring a sound to the front and vice versa. Transient Master can also help reduce reverbs on muddy recordings.
